Family

2018
Dimensions: 5'H x 2'W x 2'D
Materials: bronze, motor, hair, steel

I am interested in the ways in which we influence and reflect our community – existing within or without, inside or outside of them. Family is the most essential and intimate form of community. This primary relationship affects how we relate to the other groups to which we belong.
To create the “gears” of Family, I cast the spinning heads of my family (myself, my wife, and my daughter) making kissing faces. The bronze material reflects the yellow color typically attributed to the Asian race. These heads are mirror polished, creating the illusion that they are rotating. Acting like the belt around the gears, strands of our hair are tied together into one thread rotating discreetly between our lips. We are tied together genetically and through our care for each other. As a family, our connections to each other propel us and create greater momentum together. Without it, the mechanism fails.
