Both Prof. Ross Walter(music) and I teach at Virginia Commonwealth University where we share interest in the interdisciplinary collaboration between art and music. After collaborating and sharing knowledge within our respective fields, we’ve investigated unique facets of each which will enhance this performance.
Ross and I were invited to perform for “Through a Glass Darkly” at the Delaware Contemporary in the Fall of 2022 as anchors of the show. Our performance was on the opening night of the gallery show. Antiphonal brass music performed by VCU music students transmitted vibrations which in turn affected instrument-mounted lasers aimed at a projection screen creating unique light reflections. The performance was visually effective on a grand scale with images projected on a massive screen, as well as being musically powerful surrounding the audience with antiphonal brass playing. In this collaborative, interdisciplinary research, we were able to realize our idea to visualize the invisible through the projection of sound waves on the screen.
